Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov: Bulgaria effectively guards European borders

02.10.2025

Bulgaria guards European borders extremely well and effectively. Compared to 2024, attempts to illicitly cross the border between Bulgaria and Türkiye went down by 75% and over. Practically, there is not an illicit migration movement that poses a threat to European security. This was stated by Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov in Copenhagen where today he is attending the Meeting of the European Political Community.

The Prime Minister focused specifically on efforts to cope with smugglers. What they do is a challenge to security and stability in Europe and in addition they commit a crime, Rossen Jeliazkov stressed.

The Prime Minister noted the great importance of partnership and of joint operations to guard the border with states such as Austria, Romania, Greece, among other. Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov pointed out the role of legislation, especially in the area of return and readmission as well as the enforcement of the Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Our effort is to return illicit migrants to their countries of origin, the Prime Minister pointed out. Rossen Jeliazkov noted that it is precisely this policy that Bulgaria has adhered to over the years that receives the understanding of many of the member states. The security of Europe lies not only on border protection with physical force with equipment and technologies in which we invest a lot, including European resources, but also on the right policies to cut off any attempt at illegal migration to the continent, the Prime Minister said further.
